Hank Greenberg, for the many of us too young to remember, was the Detroit Tiger’s superstar player of the 1930s and ’40s, most notable for his proud Jewishness in an anti-Semitic field. Born in the Bronx, Greenberg rose to challenge Babe Ruth’s home run record and become the first $100,000 baseball player. He held iconic significance for many American Jews, among them Alan Dershowitz and Walter Matthau, both of whom reminisce here. The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg is a straightforward documentary on an American hero. One would expect to see it on educational television, perhaps rented for a high school history class.
